Jon Malamud

Speaking about the 20th century artist Theresa Bernstein

Theresa Bernstein was a prolific Jewish American painter whose lifetime spanned the entire twentieth century.  She never gained the fame of her contemporaries such as Jackson Pollack or Georgia O'Keefe, but it was not because of any less talent or output.  Although she lived in NYC for most of her life, her early Jewish roots were here in Philadelphia.

Norm Rubin will be the Adult Education featured speaker.  He has been a featured speaker at many local forums.  His topic will be the Rise and Demise of the Borscht Belt, a term given to the Catskills area of New York.  Norm will present the history of that area which was transformed in the early 1900s through the 1960s into a major vacation and summer camp mecca for Jewish families at resorts like the Concord, Grossinger's, and the Nevele.  Norm's talk will highlight many of the well known entertainers who got their start performing at resort hotels in the Catskills, including Mel Brooks, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Danny Kaye, Dean Martin, and Jerry Lewis.  Norm also has a personal connection to the Borsht Belt.  His grandfather owned a hotel in Liberty, New York that was part of the history.  Norm's talk will include many photos from this bygone era.
