Scholar in Residence

Through the vivid prism of her family’s story Rahel Musleah introduces the distinctive heritage of the Jews of India. The seventh generation of a Calcutta family with roots in Baghdad, she shares her rare and intimate knowledge of this ancient community’s history, customs and melodies.

Friday, January 18, 2019 - Please join us for a unique Shabbat Service and program – all done in the tradition of the Jews of India.  Our Guest Scholar in Residence will offer a presentation on “Jewish Calcutta Through Music and Memory” and present a fascinating personal journey mirroring the story of Calcutta’s Jews with humor, poignancy and song.

Saturday, January 19, 2019 - Don’t miss this special Shabbat Shira Service featuring an Indian flair.  Rahel Musleah will lead the Torah service and chant Torah and haftarah in the Baghdadi-Indian nusah and tropes and will present a D’var Torah on “Recreating Community Through Prayer”.  Shabbat morning services will be followed by our traditional Tu B’Shevat Seder including some Indian delights!

Finally, join us for Motzaei Shabbat and a unique dinner and Havdalah experience:  Masala Havdalah:  A Spicy end to Shabbat.

Our Scholar-In-Residence weekend is generously supported by the Jacqueline Steinberg Adult Education Fund.
