In the Torah, a landmark case of inheritance was presented before Moses when the daughters of Zelophchad argued that just because their father sired no sons didn't mean that his land should pass out of their family. They successfully contested the supposition that daughters couldn't inherit land and won their father's inheritance.
Over 3000 years later comes the story of Russ and Daughters, a 4 generation Lower East Side of NYC business that is eventually taken over by the owner's daughters when the sons pursue careers of their own. "The Sturgeon Queens" documents this personable story about tradition and modernity. Renowned personalities such as 60 minutes correspondent Morley Safer and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg contribute to the narrative.
The movie is 53 minutes in length. We will start the evening by examining the case of the Daughters of Zelophchad as found in the Torah narrative. Then we will sit back and view "The Sturgeon Queens". We will conclude with a discussion based on the Torah tale and this ground-breaking movie. The evening promises to educate, enlighten and inspire!! Our program begins at 7:30pm in the social hall and will conclude by 9:00pm. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
